One local group formed to battle illegal home conversions, which have been an increasing issue in southwest Brooklyn over the past several years, is looking to raise some money to continue its battle.
The Brooklyn Housing Preservation Alliance (BHPA) will host a fundraiser on Saturday, August 6 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Indigo Murphy’s, 71st Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway.
BHPA has sought to document illegal conversions in the neighborhood as well as providing input with respect to legislation drafted by Councilmembers Vincent Gentile, Jumaane Williams and Barry Grodenchik that was submitted to the City Council in June.
Illegally converting traditional one and two family homes into multiple dwellings not only endangers the lives of tenants, neighbors and first responders but also overloads local sewers, water mains and even the New York City school system, according to advocates.
“We’re doing this because we want to continue to raise awareness, which can be time-consuming and costly,” said Bob Cassara, BHPA’s president. “We want to generate more money to spread more information so that we can get people involved in the community and committed to stopping illegal home conversions in our neighborhoods.”
