BREAKING: Dyker power outage leaves more than 800 in the dark

More than 800 Con Edison customers in the Dyker Heights area are currently without power, according to the company.

The outage, which began at about 1:13 p.m. Thursday afternoon, spans from 70th Street through 74^th Street, from 11^th Avenue through 13^th Avenue.

A spokesperson for Con Edison said the cause is under investigation.

According to the agency’s website, there is an estimated restoration time of 5 p.m.

The outage comes less than a month after another of its kind left thousands of Dyker residents without power on Monday, July 9. According to Con Edison, more than 6,000 customers were affected by that outage, for which the company originally gave an estimated restoration time of 4:30 p.m. but deemed under control by just 2:04 p.m.

The outage, which broke out around 1 p.m. that day, was eventually blamed on damaged equipment, a preliminary investigation chalking the outage up to a mishap during scheduled work.

Dyker Heights is no stranger to electricity outages. The neighborhood has above-ground power lines, making it “really sensitive to weather,” Josephine Beckmann, district manager of Community Board 10, told this paper back in July, 2016 when the community was hit with a storm-related power outage that left over 1,200 homes without electricity. In 2014, a large power outage, also weather-related, affected about 7,500 Con Edison customers in the Dyker Heights area.
