First place Bonnies get down to details

Although the Bonnies had an impressive 71-36 win over St. Edmund Prep, Fontbonne Athletic Director Romeo Petric was more impressed with how this season’s Varsity has earned an early 5-0 first place tie by “getting down to the details on the court.”

According to Petric, the success of this season’s revamped Varsity is the team’s ability to execute the details of a play on either offense or defense. In particular, Molloy-bound senior point guard Katie Marquardt has been able to get good reads on the court in order to give her teammates the best opportunity to score.

In the St. Edmund’s game, Marquardt (17 points) was able to distribute the ball around the court to get three other teammates plus herself into double digits – Jill Howard with 15 points, Breanne McDonnell with 13 points and Allie Bartholomeo with 12 points.

As for defense, with the addition of Winter Charles and “Shoeless” Izzy Chirico, these two new forwards have embraced their job to control the boards to keep their team in the game with rebound possession.

In fact at this early stage of the season over a five-game span, the Bonnies lead the Division A league in both categories of offense and defense with an average of 65 points scored per game, and an average of just 29 points scored against them.

Pleased with his team’s execution so far, Coach Steve Oliver stated, “At this point I really don’t have anything more to add about this team; their play speaks for itself.”

So far, the Bonnies’ play has earned them a 5-0 first place tie with their Queens rival McClancy, last season’s Brooklyn-Queens Division A Champions that Fontbonne is scheduled to play in February.
