Gas explosion injures four in Gravesend home

An explosion ripped through the second floor of a two-story home in the Gravesend area on Saturday, January 20, leaving four people injured, one seriously.

According to the FDNY, fire was reported at around 8:18 a.m. at the home near Bay 49th Street and Cropsey Avenue.

Authorities say that the explosion was triggered by a natural gas leak and the fire was under control at around 8:31 a.m.

Reports say that the explosion caused the window from the second story to shatter.

One of the victims was described as having sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries, and was rushed to a hospital. Three other individuals sustained minor injuries and were reportedly treated on scene.

National Grid was also on the scene.

“National Grid cooperated fully with the FDNY investigation,” a spokesperson for National Grid told this paper in a statement. “Crews made sure the area was safe, repaired a gas main in front of the building and conducted monitoring, surveying and testing.  The safety of our customers and the communities we serve is our number one priority and concern.  We encourage customers to call 911 or National Grid at 718-643-4050 if they suspect a gas leak.  We take any and all reports of natural gas leaks seriously and will respond immediately to conduct an assessment.”

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by fire marshals.
