Generally Speaking: Markowitz holds annual Lunar New Year banquet

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz held his annual Chinese New Year celebration at the palatial New Spring Garden Restaurant, 912 – 65th Street, in Sunset Park.

Sunset Park now has the city’s largest Asian population. At this year’s event, Markowitz singled out for special honors Kenneth DalyDeon Livingston; famed restaurateur Michael Buzzy O’KeeffeYvonne Riley-Tepic.

Coordinating the event was Debra Garcia, who is also the gal behind those fabulous free summer concerts Markowitz has run for many years. The costumed dancing lions and entertainment at the banquet wereprovided by the Brooklyn Chinese American Association headed by Paul Mak.

Among some of the celebrants we spotted were Gene Brody and his staff from the Bay Ridge Credit Union, Pam Brier and Douglas Jablon from Maimonides Medical Center, Kings County Democratic chief Frank SeddioMichael Gerstein and Bernard GrahamSandra ChapmanHoward SchoorMarvin ReiskindEllen DriesenRon SchweigerDenise Arbesu.

Also attending were members of the Society of Old Brooklynites and the Brooklyn Consumer Federation.Proceeds from the event go to Camp Brooklyn, a non-profit organization that provides sleep-away summer camp vacations for children from low-income families.

He spoke about holistic health, homeopathic remedies and natural healing aids.The group also discussed the rise in city property taxes, SCHE (Senior Citizen Homeowner’s Exemption) and STAR (School Tax Relief) exemptions plus how to appeal new property assessments. Council Chair Susan Lavin, also a real estate broker, conducted the meeting.

The Society of Old Brooklynites had as its monthly guest speaker, Peter Crupe, who heads the Brooklyn Chapter of the Montague Street Lodgers and is a member of London’s International Sherlock Holmes Society. During his remarks, he mentioned that in one of the Holmes mysteries, the famous detective comes to America posing as a secret agent to seek a fugitive who had fled to the then city of Brooklyn. Crupe’s Lodgers are currently celebrating their 25th anniversary.

John Heffernan’s Rhapsody Players held a successful musical fundraiser titled, Giving Back this past Saturday night at St. Patrick’s School. It was to offset some of the expenses St. Patrick’s School incurred helping students that were displaced from their schools near Breezy Point,as a result of Superstorm Sandy.

Featured performers included Colleen Martin-O’Donnell, Kiernan HamiltonAnthony MarinoJohn and Donna HeffernanBernard Smith and Eileen Monahan.
