The United Military Veterans of Kings County have announced Brooklyn’s 150th annual Kings County Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 29, starting at 11 a.m.
The line of march will be along Third Avenue from 78th Street to Marine Avenue, then up to Fourth Avenue and over to John Paul Jones Park at 101st Street.
It’s the oldest continuous Memorial Day Parade in the Metropolitan Area, and one of the oldest in America. This parade dates back to when Brooklyn was an independent city and the third largest in the country.
Since national attention will be focused on this 150th Anniversary Memorial Day Parade, the sponsoring committee is literally pulling out all the stops to encourage a good turnout from veterans all across the city, and urging veterans of all wars to join them for this historic parade as they salute, honor and mourn all the patriotic Americans who made the supreme sacrifice aboard ships, in terrorist attacks and on the battlefields around the world.
There will be several floats, antique cars and a vintage fire truck that veterans with disabilities or unable to march can ride.
Obviously, a major parade of this magnitude is very expensive to organize. Luckily, Frankie Marra is once again stepping up and with the cooperation of the Salty Dog Restaurant, is running a mini band concert and fundraiser on Sunday, April 30, from 1 to 9 p.m. The featured bands are Cherry Bomb NY, Rock Frame, Out of the Blue, Frankie Marra and his Band, Head N South and Radio Daze. The donation at the door is $25.
On May 19, at Coney Island’s new Ford Amphitheater, there will be a “Salute to Our Heroes” concert with Grammy Award-winning stars Dionne Warwick and Jon Secada, plus Bernie Williams and his all-star band. Tickets start at $39 and are available via Livenation.com. Proceeds from the event will also go towards the 150th Memorial Day Parade.
The Environmental and Safety Committee of the Bay Ridge Community Council has agreed to support and help promote the E-recycling event being organized by State Senator Marty Golden on Saturday, April 22.
Since it is no longer permissible to leave old computers, TVs and other electronic devices curbside for Sanitation pickups, Golden in cooperation with GreenChip Electronic Waste Solutions, is presenting the event at St. Anselm Church, which will be making available its parking lot on Fourth Avenue between 81st and 82nd Streets, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for area residents to drop off unused electronic gear for recycling.
