Gravesend decks the halls

Postponed due to inclement weather, the tree lighting at Lady Moody Square, sponsored by State Senator Marty Golden, took place on Thursday, December 13.

John Quaglione, deputy chief of staff for Golden, said that the location of the tree is a special one: nestled in an area surrounded by local businesses and P.S. 95 at Avenue U and Van Sicklen Street.

“It really lights up the heart of Gravesend and brings about a holiday spirit for the people of the neighborhood,” he said.

This year, cheerleaders and twirlers from I.S. 228, David A. Boody Intermediate School, performed a show for those in attendance. The audience serenaded the students with Christmas carols, sung from lyrics on Xeroxed paper.

As always, Santa Claus was on hand with candy canes and hot chocolate.

“It was another festive event,” Quaglione said. “The Christmas spirit is alive and well in this part of Brooklyn. We encourage everyone to have a safe and happy holiday – and don’t forget to shop locally!”
