JV and Varsity Bonnies finish season at semi-finals

Molloy 5 Fontbonne 1 – Varsity semi-final

After finishing the regular season with an uneven record of 5-7 and beating St. Saviour in the first round of the Brooklyn-Queens Varsity AA playoffs, there was no question that it would be an uphill battle for the Bonnies to get past the 12-0 first place Stanners of Molloy in the semi-final round.

After preparing their game plan, the visiting Bonnies put the bat on the ball for an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with one out. Looking to build on their early lead, Natalie LaCognata singled and Arianna Heinsch sent a rocket over second base for what looked like “a sure home run” until Molloy’s centerfielder charged the sinking line drive to rob Heinsch of extra bases.

Consequently, the outfield catch turned into a double play to end the inning as the ball was quickly relayed back to the infield to double up Fontbonne’s runner at first base.

Fontbonne’s slim 1-0 lead soon evaporated as the Bonnies committed seven errors over the course of the game to allow five runs across the plate despite Arianna Heinsch’s two-hit effort from the mound.

Errors coupled with 11 strikeouts by Molloy’s ace pitcher Kelsey Carr allowed the Stanners to make their 5-1 lead stand up for the semi-final win.

After beating Fontbonne, the Stanners would advance to the finals where they claimed the 2017 Brooklyn-Queens AA championship in a 4-1 win over the Mary Louis Academy for an undefeated season.

St. Francis Prep 7 Fontbonne 4 – JV semi-final

After the 6-4 third seeded Fontbonne JV beat St. Saviour in the first round of the playoffs to advance to the semi-finals, it was time to confront the always-tough second seeded Terriers of St. Francis Prep.

Just as she’s done all season, Bella Gargano came through with an extra base hit for a double that drove in three Bonnies for an early 3-0 lead. Coasting with the early lead, pitcher Brianna Alicandro held Prep in check until the Terriers displayed their offensive power late in the game for the eventual 7-4 St. Francis semi-final win.

After eliminating the Bonnies from the playoffs, the Terriers went on to the finals to beat first seeded Molloy 4-1 to win the 2017 BQCHSAA JV AA Championship.
