Kearney track stars shine

Members of the Bishop Kearney High School track team ran outstanding times at the 2016 Intersectional Championship/Catholic High School CHSAA state championship event, held on May 21 at Icahn Stadium.

Graduating senior Jackie Gallagher finished third in the 1500 meter event, qualifying her for the outdoor state championship, which includes public, private and Catholic schools. This is only the second time a Kearney runner has qualified for the Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor state championship.

Graduating senior Theresa Gallagher placed sixth in the 300 meter event, missing a medal by only one point and also qualifying for the state championship. Their cousin, rising junior Colleen Gallagher, was sensational in the 800 meter event, running 4:57 to take sixth place in the event, breaking Kearney’s nine-year-old school record by three seconds.

On the local scene, Colleen came in first in the Buckley’s-Kennedy’s 5K Charity Race in Breezy Point on May 15, followed closely by her cousins, Jackie and Theresa. In the Kenny Dolan Memorial 5K Race in Prospect Park on June 5, Colleen was the first female runner to reach the finish line, followed by her cousins, Jackie in second and Tess in fifth place. Rising junior Bridget Pynn came in fifth for the 16-19 age group, assuring the team a first place overall win.

John Lovett is the team coach.
