With the goal of saving lives, Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis is teaming up with Professional HeartStarters, a New York-based first aid training group, to offer a free course on the basics of CPR on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Academy.
“CPR is a life-saving skill that everyone should know,” Malliotakis said at a press conference announcing the program. “The more people who are educated with this skill, the more lives we can save.”
Because four out of five cardiac arrests occur at a person’s home, having basic CPR skills can be the difference between life and death for a loved one.
“It’s really important that everyone learn,” says Kevin Hazel, a Staten Island native and director of the program.
Professional HeartStarters, which was established in 1992 and is run by a mother-son team of experienced health professionals, was founded with the intention of bringing life-saving medical techniques into the homes of everyday New Yorkers.
“We wanted to do something for the community,” says Amelia Hazel, a former paramedic with 25 years of experience.
Holy Angels Catholic Academy is located at 337 74th Street, just a few blocks from the R train.
