A Look Back: September 11, 2001

An image that is seared into the memory of New Yorkers is that of the World Trade Center smoking in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

In this photo, from the files of this newspaper, the nearly empty BQE is in the foreground, itself a dramatic statement of the impact of the attacks on the city and its residents, though clearly overshadowed by the smoking skyscraper in the distance.

Though 16 years have passed, those of us who were here when the attacks took place remember them like it was yesterday, and continue to mourn the 2,996 people killed by terrorists that fateful day.
