A 35-year-old man was arrested after allegedly striking and killing a pedestrian during a hit and run in the Sunset Park area.

According to authorities, Leonel Ortega-Flores, driving a 2004 GMC van, allegedly hit 32-year-old Jose Cardoso of Staten Island on Saturday, June 30 at around 8 p.m. after losing control of the vehicle while trying to park on 21st Street between Third and Fourth Avenues. Police say that the victim was pinned between a building and the suspect’s van after it mounted on the sidewalk and struck him.

Cardoso, who sustained trauma to the head and torso, was rushed by EMS to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Bronx resident Ortega-Flores fled the scene, and was later apprehended and charged with second degree vehicular manslaughter and leaving an accident that resulted in death. He was also charged with a motor vehicle violation for not having a driver’s license.

The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident.
