Subways to see more than $60 million in resiliency funding

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Thursday, September 3 that MTA New York City Transit has received over $57 million in Federal Transit Administration grants for two major storm resiliency projects in Sandy-affected subway stations.

The first grant of $52,425,000 (with a $17,475,000 match by the MTA) will fund a new state-of-the-art communications system while the second of $4,716.354 (with a $1,572,211 match from the MTA) will fund a hardening project to protect station rooms that are critical to service delivery.

“Superstorm Sandy brought unprecedented disruption to the New York subway system – but now we are building the system back better and stronger than before,” said Cuomo, stressing that this funding is all about thinking ahead. “This funding helps us move forward with critical upgrades that will keep the system running and keep travelers safe during an emergency.”
