The Lucia pageant.

Scandinavian traditions are happily at home in Bay Ridge, and never more so than when the holidays roll around.

On Sunday December 13, the Swedish Folkdancers of NY hosted their Swedish dinner dance and Lucia Pageant. The event was held at the Danish Athletic Club, 735 65th Street, where guests were treated to live entertainment from “Smörgåsbandet,” a four-piece, accordion-based band accompanied by a nyckelharpa, drums and a guitar. The band performed both Scandinavian and American music including general dance music as well as a few Christmas songs.

In addition, the Lucia pageant recreated the traditional Swedish Festival of Light. Led by a woman dressed in a white gown with a red sash, and wearing a crown of candles, the pageant is the centerpiece of St.Lucia’s Day celebrations, bringing light into darkness on one of the shortest days of the year.

Former Secretary of the Swedish Folkdancers of NY Ingeborg Rupinski noted, “A lot of people showed up. It was very nice.” There were about 65 people in attendance for the festive event, she said, stressing, “It was a joyful affair,” which showcased the Christmas spirit for those who attended.

Rupinski along with President of the Folk Dancers group, Madeline Pearson were organizers of the event.
