Oh, baby! Brooklyn welcomes first newborns of the New Year

Oh, baby!

Like clockwork, hospitals across the borough welcomed their first babies of the year on Monday, January 1.

Brooklyn’s first newborn – Joshua Miguel Brito – came just 25 minutes after midnight at Bed-Stuy’s Woodhull Medical Center. Brito – who weighed in at six pounds and 14 ounces – was born to parents Erica Hernandez and Joshua Brito.

Brito was born just two minutes later than the city’s second baby – an unnamed baby born at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx. Flushing Hospital welcomed a baby girl – Tania Shirin – at 12:01 a.m.

Some four hours later, Wilmer De Los Santos Asencio, the first baby of 2018 at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn, took his first breath at 4:11 a.m. Baby Wilmer weighed in at five pounds, 10 ounces and was 19.5 inches in length. He was born to Maria Asencio De Los Santos and Wilson Andres De Los Santos Guzman.

Little Wilmer will return home to Sunset Park with his mother where he will be joined by older brother, 17-year-old Jonás Fermin Asencio.

Just a few hours later, NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital welcomed its first baby of 2018, Aarya Datar.

Aarya was born at 6:49 a.m. to parents Praveen Datar and Vandekode Kulkarni of Crown Heights. She is the couple’s second child and a little sister to a 17-month-old named Aadhya.

Aarya weighed in at seven pounds, 10 ounces and was 20.75 inches long.

“We are so thrilled to welcome Aarya into the world,” said Kulkarni. “We feel very special to have one of the first babies of the New Year. It is really exciting.”
