Assistant Editor, Brooklyn Reporter / Brooklyn Daily Eagle
Brooklyn Reporter is the umbrella brand of the Home Reporter and Brooklyn Spectator, newspapers and a website serving southern Brooklyn neighborhoods. Brooklyn Daily Eagle is the daily print edition of the Brooklyn Eagle newsroom. Our mission is to provide readers with actionable and informative journalism to better their communities.
Brooklyn Reporter and Brooklyn Daily Eagle are seeking an assistant editor to contribute to the editorial excellence of their reporting. The assistant editor will work with reporters to refine their writing, help recruit and manage a stable of freelance writers, and contribute to the print production routines of both brands.
Duties include:
- Line edit and copy edit 6-10 news stories each day, and working with reporters to get more information or rewrite when necessary
- Process pages for print production in coordination with designer. This entails taking content from the brands’ websites and formatting it in Google Docs.
- Occasionally proofread pages for the newspaper prior to print publishing
- Serve as occasional backup for digital publishing on BrooklynReporter.com
Requirements:
- 2-4 years in a newsroom performing writing and editing tasks
- A refined “nose for news” and an ability to convey that to readers and colleagues
- An ability to write and edit quickly and meticulously on deadline
- Deep familiarity with AP style guidelines
The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge of southern Brooklyn communities, including familiarity with news trends, local elected officials and idiosyncrasies that differentiate the neighborhoods. The ideal candidate will be familiar with WordPress, Mailchimp and Google Analytics.
Compensation is $40,000 to $50,000 based on experience.
