Mapleton was developed between 1913 and 1919 and was eventually encompassed by its sister neighborhood, Borough Park.

The small community, now considered a sub neighborhood, is given recognition by the Mapleton branch of the Brooklyn Public Library on 17th Avenue and 60th Street.

On the border of Bensonhurst, it also contains Washington Cemetery, known as the largest inhabited Jewish cemetery in New York.
