GENERALLY SPEAKING: Week of November 17

WOUNDED WARRIORS TOUR BROOKLYN AND THE CITY

It was a whirl-wind Veterans Day week for some wounded warriorsthat came to New York for the first time from the Brooke ArmyMedical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Their tour and itinerary wereput together by FDNY Community Coordinator LyndaThompson. Along with WW II Navy veteran HowieDunnMikeMoylan and Army veteran Thomas Kane

We attended a fund-raising dinner at Giando’s on theWilliamsburg waterfront. During the dinner, warriors and otherslooked out large windows facing the bay where a FDNY fireboatexecuted a geyser salute.

The American Legion Amity Post presented the Colors and an honorguard from the Knights Templar flanked the warriors as they enteredthe ballroom. Also attending were Fort Hamilton Garrison CommanderMike GouldSylviaLaughlinMarty Golden andCouncilmember Vinnie GentileJoe Keeler

The honored guests included wounded service members CaptainTommy Davis

Staff Sergeant Scott RobertsAdrienne RuizJasonGrant Grace and Jerome Elliot. Sitting atour table next to the honorees were Joe BoleshMae DunnJerome AstarteKenneth DunnCeil Fessa andGerald Lockwood.

Among the sights the wounded warriors toured were the BrooklynWall of Remembrance at MCU Park, Nathan’s Famous, the New York CityTransit Museum, Rockefeller Center, the NBC Studios, Chinatown andCentral Park, and they also rode aboard a fire engine during thebig New York city Veteran’s Day Parade.

The next day, we met the warriors at Ground Zero and visitedwith them at the two reflecting memorial pools, each one coveringthe footprint of one of the destroyed twin towers.

Next stop was a dinner hosted by the FDNY Manhattan BoroughCommand at the fire house for Engine Company #7 and Ladder Company#7.

The following morning, we were at the annual Veterans DayBreakfast hosted by Senator Golden. Later the same day, we attendeddinner at the Brooklyn Command/Division 11, Engine Company 201 andLadder Company # 110 at the Tillary Street fire house.

On Saturday, November 19, the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn,founded in 1900, will hold its annual memorial mass and communionbreakfast. The mass will be celebrated by the club’s spiritualdirector and the head of the Brooklyn Diocese, BishopNicholas DiMarzio

Several elected officials attended and entertainment wasprovided by the Rhythm and Style Tappers from the Fort HamiltonSenior Center. Also present for the ceremonies were LieutenantColonel Lee AndersonBill Guarinello

After listening to the pastor’s electrifying homily during theservice, it’s no wonder that he is affectionally known as, ThePope of Bensonhurst! Also attending the service were some of thestudents from Bishop Kearney High School who recently completed atrip to Washington and

Fort Belvoir to visit and present gifts to wounded warriors.
