BROOKLYN EDUCATION: Week of December 1

In honor of Veterans Day, I.S. 187, the Christa McAuliffeSchool, conducted a special assembly with Mr. Joe Ingrate as theguest speaker. This is the second year Ingrate, a 93-year-old WorldWar II veteran, has generously given his time to speak with theeighth-grade students about his experiences during the war.

He spent four years fighting in Europe, was awarded the PurpleHeart for sustaining injuries during battle, and rejoined his unitwell in time to liberate the prisoners of the Nazi ConcentrationCamp in Dachau, Germany. From his speech, the students received anaccount of what World War II was really like from a man who notonly experienced it firsthand, but who also grew up in theirneighborhood and attended I.S. 187 back in 1924 when it was P.S.187.

Ingrate received thunderous applause and a standing ovation. Thestudents even asked for his autograph! After the assembly, thestudents wrote letters to Ingrate, thanking him for his time andexpressing their admiration for his brave service to ourcountry.

The Saint Saviour High School Spanish Club visited the UnitedNations on November 11. The students had the opportunity to meetChilean Ambassador Mr. Octavio ErrázurizGuilisasti and Chilean Advisor Mr. Julio Torres. Saint Saviour isin the process of formulating a Skype relationship with anall-girls Roman Catholic high school in Chile. Skype is a softwareapplication that enables users to make voice and video calls andchat over the Internet. The girls will use Skype to becomefriends.

Visitation Academy, located at 90th Street and Ridge Boulevard,will host a Christmas Fair on December 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30p.m. in the school’s Alumnae Room.
