Adelphi kids celebrate 100th day of school

In anticipation of the 150th anniversary of Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn next year, the prestigious institution celebrated the 100th day of school with a spectacular performance by the kindergarten of Adelphi’s Lower School and Early Childhood Development Program.

Spectators included Lower, Middle and Upper School students (pre-kindergarten through 12th grade) as well as administration, faculty, staff, parents and invited guests.

“Our guests were in awe at the ability displayed by our little Adelphians – it was a real treat for everyone,” said Adelphi’s Assistant Head of School, Iphigenia Romanos. The kindergarten students counted to 100 by ones, fives, and 10s in verse and in song as part of a production that lasted for over 30 minutes and culminated with a performance of the monetary system and the counting of coins.

Their teacher, Kerry Connors, explained how planning for the show began on the first day of school and the students practiced every single day. All the props and decorations for the show were made in the classroom by the students.

Dr. Roy Blash, president of Adelphi Academy, commented, “It was truly remarkable to see how much the youngsters in our kindergarten program have advanced in such a short time. Adding, subtracting, and learning the five and 10 times tables in itself is a feat. To perform this flawlessly in front of a large audience is simply amazing.”

Director of Operations and alumnus of Adelphi, Albert Corhan was especially proud. “Adelphi is credited for the establishment of the first and longest operating kindergarten in the borough of Brooklyn. The kindergarten program is such an important part of our school community. It was wonderful to see all of our students including our Upper School seniors looking on with such pride.”

As the oldest private, independent, continuing, coeducational, college-preparatory day school in Brooklyn, Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn has been “effectively preparing young people for college, career, and life, one day at a time” for 150 years.
