Xaverian starts the season with wind in their sails

The CHSAA defending city champion, Xaverian Clippers baseball team, is off to a fine start once again in 2012. The Clippers are 2-0 in league play, defeating Bishop Ford and Christ the King 12-0 and 12-1 respectively last week.

The offense was powered by senior third baseman Eric Kalman and senior first baseman Sal Taormina. The two dominant pitching performances in each game were supplied by seniors John Pena and Frankie Kaplan.

This week, the Clippers take a break from league play to do battle in the 16-team Monroe High School Tournament. At present, Xaverian has advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament by defeating Long Island City and Brooklyn public school powerhouse, Grand Street.

The win over Grand Street by a score of 4-0 once again saw a dominant performance by power pitcher John Pena. The Clippers were taking on Iona Prep as this paper went to press, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals on Thursday.

The Xaverian Junior Varsity baseball team is also off to a fast start after defeating Christ the King and, on Monday, man-handling arch rival Archbishop Molloy 10-1. Against Molloy, the offense exploded for 12 hits and received a strong complete game performance from sophomore Anthony Sigismondi. The Junior Varsity currently sits at the top of the CHSAA standings at 2-0.
