Narrows Community Theater will give its audience a grammar lesson as troupe members perform the classic, My Fair Lady at St. Patricks Auditorium over the next two weekends.
We have been around for 41 years in Bay Ridge and we have never done My Fair Lady, said Susan Huizinga, president of NCT and producer of the play. It was about time.
Director Rick Rossman has directed about 150 shows, 70 of which have been musicals. He has done My Fair Lady four times.
He was perfect for this, Huizinga said.
The play was written by Alan Jay Lerner, with music by Frederick Loewe. It was adapted from George Bernard Shaws play Pygmalion and the motion picture that was based on it. This production features Markus Hauck as music director and Jennifer DeVanes choreography.
My Fair Lady first opened on Broadway in March, 1956, starring Julie Andrews as the Cockney Eliza Doolittle, who seeks help from Professor Henry Higgins, played by Rex Harrison, in phonetics. Audrey Hepburn played opposite Harrison in the 1964 musical film adaptation, with vocals done by Marni Nixon.
Set in Edwardian London, the play follows Doolittles lessons on how to speak proper English. In this production, Ashley Harris Eliza will play opposite John Healys Professor Higgins. They will sing all the favorites, including Wouldnt it be Loverly? I Could Have Danced All Night, On the Street Where You Live and Ive Grown Accustomed to Her Face.
All the songs are just so lovely, Huizinga said. It really is an enjoyable show.
