Falling Bricks Closes Part Of Cranberry Street

Falling bricks from the facade of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church caused the sidewalk outside the 55 Cranberry Street sanctuary to be closed to pedestrians this past Tuesday, August 7.

The century-old building has been in need of repairs in both the interior and exterior. The church’s congregation is holding an ongoing fundraising campaign to pay for these repairs.

No one was injured, but this is the second incident of debris from historic churches falling onto the street. Nearly two weeks ago, lightning struck the steeples at an under-renovation Christ Church, sending brick and scaffolding onto the head of 61-year-old resident Richard Schwartz, who later died. Portions of Kane and Clinton Streets have since been temporarily closed to traffic.
