Weekend To-Do: August 4 – August 5

The weekend is finally here and it’s time to get out and enjoy this great weather. Family, friends, adults, kids, here are some ideas.

Saturday, August 4

  • Jam on Dumbo’s Summer Family Music Festival is here again! Come to Superfine at 126 Front Street from Noon to 6 p.m. for a fun-filled afternoon. Hula hoop artist Miss Saturn will also be on hand as the Emcee, and will have kid-friendly cabaret. Make sure to stop by the art table to make your own masterpiece using found objects and join in on a community mural about “What I Love About DUMBO!” Bands include Shine & The Moonbeams, Jeff Newell, and Jen from AudraRox.
  • Take a guided bus tour through the Brooklyn Navy Yard – a 150-year shipbuilding facility that includes a Civil-War era dry dock, a 24-acre former Navy hospital campus, and the nation’s first multi-story LEED Gold-certified industrial building. Abbreviated one hour “highlights” tour begins at 1 p.m. meeting at Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92. $30 full tour $18 short tour. Members of BLDG 92 receive a 10% discount. This event is ongoing on Saturday and Sundays, 2:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Go behind the scenes of everyday life in an American nursing home with filmmakers Brian Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky in “The Patron Saints.” Encounter the realities which come with aging. Cassidy and Shatzky will hold a Q&A afterwards and be available at a post-screening reception with complimentary beverages. Doors at the Old American Can Factory — 232 Third Street at Third Avenue — open at 8:00 p.m., live music begins at 8:30, at 9 the film begins, and a reception in the courtyard will follow from 11 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.
  • Come celebrate Opening Night of the 2012 Art of Brooklyn Film Festival in style! Proud to hold their Opening Night party at the beautiful Rooftop Restaurant & Lounge, atop Park Slope’s Hotel Le Bleu. Meet, mix and mingle with filmmakers, actors and industry professionals at an amazing space with stunning views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan skylines.
    Tickest include drink specials and a free Art of Brooklyn signature cocktail all night long. Sunday August 5 

  • It’s a two-part Rural Route film festival at Brooklyn Grange farm in Long Island City – 37-18 Northern Blvd Long Island City. Part 1 begins at 7:30 p.m. with live music before moving on to the five films. Part 2 begins at 10 p.m.. Tickets are $15 and are required for each part.
