Boxing In Brooklyn: Danny Jacobs, Back In The Ring

With four title matches scheduled during Barclays Center’s Fight Night, Saturday, October 20, is sure to be a bone crushing, high intensity set of bouts. But while potential champs prepare to slug their way to the top, Brooklyn native Daniel “The Golden Child” Jacobs is preparing for his much less publicized but, just as emotionally driven, return to the ring.

A middleweight who has racked up over 22 victories in his 23 fight professional career, Jacobs is preparing for his first match since leaving the sport to receive treatment for cancer.

Jacobs, who’s stood face to face with greats like Jose Varela and fought the undercard for the world famous Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiáo versus Ricky Hatton bout, threw in the gloves after being diagnosed with cancer in 2011. However, after intensive treatment and surgery, doctors have cleared him to reenter the ring.

The Brownsville native and Park Slope resident is already thrilled to be healthy and an active dad and husband to son Nathaniel, 3, and wife Natalie. Now he is even more excited to be stepping back into the ring – and to do it in his hometown.

“For somebody like myself to have my own stadium in a sense is amazing. Madison Square Garden is the best,” he said, “but to have my own of Brooklyn means so much more.”

Other sets during Fight Night include Danny Garcia vs. Erik Morales, Paulie Malignaggi vs. Pablo Cesar Cano, and Hassan N’Dam vs. Peter Quillin.

Tickets for the match can be purchased online at BarclaysCenter.com/events.
