P.S. 58 evacuated after hoax bomb threat

All students and staff at P.S. 58, The Carroll School, were evacuated early this morning — Thursday, January 31 — after someone called the school and reported that a bomb had been placed in the building.

Then the same caller called back to say it was just a hoax.

The evacuation was ordered anyway and the students were back in school by noon, which was also around the time that responding officers from the NYPD’s Emergency Services and 76 precinct gave the all-clear for them to return.

It is unknown who made the prank call and for what reason, but parents and community leaders commended school staff for ensuring that the evacuation went smoothly and students were calm.

“The wonderful P.S. 58 principal, Giselle McGee, and her team did a great job,” said Councilmember Brad Lander. “They’ve been practicing emergency drills all year, and to many of the kids, this just seemed like another one. The whole P.S. 58 community gets credit for being prepared, calm, & well-organized.”
