Pier 5 scores a goal: sign up for the BBP Soccer League

Soccer is finally coming to Brooklyn Bridge Park this spring.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Soccer League plans on kicking off its first season at the brand new Pier 5 fields with both an adult and youth league, to start on March 2. The youth league will be for ages 6 to 12 — which will be split into smaller age groups/teams — and will cost only $25 per child. The adult league is a bit pricier, costing $130 per person, or $1,300 per team.

The leagues are coming thanks to a partnership between the Brooklyn Bridge Parks Conservancy, Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP), Play Study Win, and Metro Soccer.

“Last year’s volleyball season was a great success and we look forward to adding soccer to the lineup this spring,” said Regina Myer, president of BBP. “This will be a terrific opportunity for children and adults to utilize the beautiful Pier 5 sports fields and explore the many features the park’s newest pier has to offer.”

Ian Walker of Metro Soccer also cheered on the continued partnership, stating that “over the past seven years we’ve established an excellent working relationship, providing free and low-cost sports and recreational services to both adults and children at the Floating Pool and Beach, the Spring Flings, and the Pier 6 beach volleyball courts.”

For the Youth League, games and skills trainings will be held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with additional practice time available on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Up to 270 children can join. The season will end on May 18.

For the Adult League, adults ages 18 and up, will practice on Wednesdays from 7 to 11 p.m. There is room for up to 24 teams of 6-12 people each.

In addition to opening registration for league members, BBP is looking for volunteer coaches, who will be mentored by Metro Soccer’s Director of Coaching, Kevin Grogan, who once played for both Manchester United in the UK and Ireland at the youth level.

The new Pier 5 sports fields officially opened in late December 2012, providing over 200,000 square feet of synthetic turf for public use.
