I.S. 259 Drama Club to present “The Importance of Being Earnest”

On Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m., the Visual & Performing Arts Department of William McKinley Intermediate School, I.S. 259, is pleased to present The Importance of Being Earnest, written by Oscar Wilde and adapted by the McKinley Drama Club.

“The Importance of Being Earnest” is a comedy centering on mistaken identities set in the 1890s. Students worked to adapt the original, updated the setting and added a mid -1990s soundtrack to create an original Jukebox Musical production that is fun for the whole family.

This year’s show marks the seventh annual production under the direction of Lauren Cooper with costumes designed by Kelly Roberts, an English Language Arts teacher. The set is by Julia Livi, art teacher, with musical direction by Wendy Russell, who kindly volunteers and happens to be Roberts’ mother. Theater really is a family affair at McKinley, the Pride of Bay Ridge.

Though adults may be at the helm for some design elements, all productions at McKinley are student-run with kids from all grades (six through eight) participating in the various tech crews from costuming and set to lighting and sound.
