Smith-9th Street station to reopen in late April

In about a month, the Smith-9th Streets station will finally reopen and straphangers will get their F and G trains to Carroll Gardens and Red Hook again after two years of repairs and delays.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) made the welcome news at the March 21 meeting of Community Board 6’s Transportation Committee. According to MTA spokesperson Andrew Inglesby, the station will reopen during the week of April 22.

The station was closed in summer of 2011 and was due to reopen late in 2012 before the scheduled date was pushed back. A report by the MTA’s Capital Program Oversight Committee blamed the delay in part to “poor management” by the contractor that was then made worse by damage from Hurricane Sandy, added Inglesby.

The F/G lines have skipped the station for the duration of construction; the G line was also extended five stops into Brooklyn, to Church Avenue, as part of an effort to appease frustrated riders. That extension was made permanent in July of 2012.
