UPDATE: Ruben Ubiles formally arrested on hate crime charges in Williamsburg mezuzah burnings

The “person-of-interest” in the case of the burned Jewish holy scrolls in Williamsburg earlier this week has been formally charged with hate crimes, said the police.

Ruben Ubiles, 35, of Brooklyn, stands charged with 12 counts each of arson, criminal mischief, and second-degree burglary, all as hate crimes.

He has also been charged with reckless endangerment, as well as criminal contempt for violating an order of protection against his girlfriend, who he reportedly stabbed in the foot in February.

Ubiles was taken out of the 81st Precinct in Bedford-Stuyvesant at about 1:45 p.m. this afternoon in handcuffs. He maintains his innocence, as stated in a Facebook post from Wednesday, insisting that he harbors no ill will towards Jewish people and may have been in the building at 85 Taylor Street — where he was caught on elevator surveillance video — but did not commit the arson.
