A suicidal man threatening to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge was talked down/rescued by members of the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit on Saturday afternoon during a nearly three-hour long operation that snarled traffic for miles along Flatbush Avenue and its tributaries, such as Fourth Avenue.
The 52-year-old black male was spotted on the Manhattan Tower of the Brooklyn Bridge shortly before 2:50 p.m., which was when officers responded to a call that he looked like he was ready to jump. Three officers — Detectives Keith Connelly and Gregory Welch and Sergeant John Flynn — donned harnesses and walked the support cables to the top of the bridge, where they talked with the man for around two hours, listening to his concerns and trying to convince him to come down to safety.
The man, who has not been identified, did come down and was taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.
