Flatbush woman dies in police custody

Early on the morning of Sunday, July 21, a woman arrested by the 70th Precinct for a verbal dispute two days earlier died in police custody.

“My daughter is dead for no reason,” stated Anita Neal, the mother of the 37-year-old woman, Kyam Livingston.

Police arrived on Stratford Road at 12:47 a.m. on Saturday, July 20 in response to a domestic dispute call from Livingston’s grandmother. Livingston, who was allegedly intoxicated, was suspected of having violated her grandmother’s order of protection against her, in place as of July 8, and was arrested at the scene.

Livingston was first brought to Kings County Hospital where she was treated for intoxication. Later that day, she was taken to the 70th Precinct for arrest processing, then to Brooklyn Central Booking to be arraigned.

Sunday morning, Livingston, who would have celebrated her birthday the following week, began having seizures and was transferred to Brooklyn Hospital. She was pronounced dead 15 minutes after arrival.

Neal blames the cops for the death of her daughter. “They killed my daughter in Central Booking waiting to be arraigned,” the distraught mother contended. “She complained of stomach ache and diarrhea, and they still made her stay in a cell for seven hours, ignoring her inmates’ pleas.”

The NYPD is currently investigating the incident and the medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death for Livingston, who leaves behind a 21-year-old-son, Alex.

“I wasn’t called,” added Neal. “They came to my house at 10, but my daughter was dead already in the cell at 6:45.

“It is under investigation, but are they [the cops] investigating the truth?”
