One tube of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel–formerly known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel–will be closed over six three-day weekends, beginning this Friday, September 20.
The affected weekends are 9 a.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday on September 20-23, October 4-7 and 18-21, November 8-11, 15-18, and 22-25.
The remaining open tube will have two lanes–one Manhattan-bound lane and one Brooklyn-bound lane. Delays are expected and alternate routes are encouraged.
As with the subway tunnel closures on the R and G lines, this tube closure is part of a project to replace the tunnel’s original, 1950s-era electrical switches and feeder cables.
The electrical system provides power to the tunnel’s ventilation, lighting, drainage, and communication systems.
