Police Beat: Crime update and community camaraderie

This Sunday marks the NYPD’s annual Brooklyn South Unity Showcase Festival in Prospect Park, just inside the entrance at Prospect Park West and 15th Street, at Bartel-Pritchard Circle.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the 13 precincts of Brooklyn South–the neighborhoods located roughly below Flatbush or Fulton Avenues–will set up tents, bouncy houses, tables of food, a performance stage, and more for a day of fun that also serves as a chance for cops and community to interact and glean information about how to better open lines of communication.

Similarly, September and Autumn marks the return of precinct community council meetings. These are essentially monthly town hall-style meetings between you and your local police precinct. Typically held in a conference room inside the precinct, these meetings are an opportunity to meet face-to-face with law enforcement whose job it is to make your family safe.

For a list of dates, times and locations for these meetings, visit NYC.gov’s NYPD website or ask at the Unity Showcase Festival!

Have you seen these men? They are wanted for allegedly attempting an armed robbery of a Chase Bank at 79 Hamilton Avenue in Carroll Gardens/the Columbia Street Waterfront at around 6:05 p.m. on September 11, said police.

The men are said to have displayed a gun and demanded cash from a teller, who refused, leading to the men to flee empty-handed.

In an UPDATE from a previous report regarding the attempted rape of a sleeping woman in Greenpoint on September 8, the police have announced a $12,000 reward for the person(s) who help provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for this crime.  A breakdown of the reward money is as follows:

  • $10,000 from the New York City Police Dept. – Arrest and Conviction
  • $2,000 from Crime Stoppers – Arrest and Indictment

It was shortly after midnight on Sunday, September 8, when the 21-year-old woman was awoken by a man climbing on top of her and attempting to rape her. She fought back and eventually, the man fled through a window in her Greenpoint apartment. She sustained minor injuries, according to the police report she soon filed with the 90th Precinct.

Now, police are searching for a man described as a Hispanic man standing between 5’4″ and 5’7″ tall, who was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with an unidentified design on the left shoulder.

Nearby surveillance video around Metropolitan Avenue shows the man walking with a bike later that night near the woman’s apartment.
