Walking for youth education with the BCS Million Step Challenge

As summer faded on Sunday, September 22, Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) held the BCS Million Step Challenge: Going the Distance for a Better Brooklyn—a one-mile walk in Prospect Park.

The event began with a quick Zumba exercise class and an awards presentation for the top fundraisers before kicking off with the walk.

The one-mile (2,000 steps) walk was designed to accommodate the range of clients including children, families and adults with physical, developmental or mental disabilities that BCS serves. This year the event doubled the number of participants from under 150 last year to nearly 350 this year and raised over $27,000 in donations and pledges.

All proceeds raised from the walk benefit BCS programs that help young people thrive through early childhood and child and youth education, keep families together through counseling and case management, and provide job training and placement assistance, mental health and wellness programs and many other services for adults with disabilities.

BCS is one of the oldest, not-for-profit, non-sectarian social service providers in New York City and one of the largest in Brooklyn.
