St. Anselm students show their school spirit

On October 16, students from Saint Anselm Catholic Academy put their best feet forward to aid their school during their annual “Walk-4-Education,” a walkathon which included all grades, and whose goal was to raise money to improve the school’s facilities, specifically in the technology department.

“We’ve been doing this for about 15 to 20 years,” said Maria Caputo, a member of the Home School Association (HSA). “It’s great. It’s for technology upgrades, such as maintenance on switchboards, iPads, faster internet.”

The fun-filled day started with students lining up in the school auditorium at 9 a.m. Once the teachers organized their respective grades, Monsignor John Maloney spoke.

“Good morning. Are we ready to walk,” he asked the students. “Are we ready to help the school and help each other?” After a prayer led by Monsignor Maloney, it was off to the streets.

The children donned navy blue shirts with “St. Anselm School” written on the back. They also carried both pom-poms and signs that were decorated with the names of students in each grade. One read “Grade 3 is proud to walk for our education.” Some of the younger kids were accompanied by their parents, who were more than happy to take part in the event.

“I think it empowers the kids to help out the school. It also teaches them about community involvement,” stated proud parent of a pre-K student, Sonia Raymond, who was carrying a sign.

Students in third grade and older walked to Shore Road and 79th Street and back. The younger students, through second grade, walked around the block of 82nd street.

Some of them marveled at various Halloween decorated homes. Others were happy just to show off their school pride. One group of kindergarteners shouted in unison, “Go K-1!” Parents and faculty shared their enthusiasm. They cheered on the children cheerleader style by chanting. “Give me an A-N-S-E-L-M!”

Teachers were also thrilled to take their students outdoors to have a good time for a good cause. “It is a fascinating way both to have fun and to help the school at the same time,” said first grade teacher Mrs. Conigliaro.

When they finished with their route, kids were treated to a hero’s welcome with marching band music which blasted from speakers as well as stickers.

Second grade teacher Mrs. Torre wanted to show her appreciation to the parents that participated. “To all the moms and dads, thank you,” said the appreciative teacher, who has taught at St. Anselm since 1993. Parents, teachers and families made donations to help the noble cause.

Afterwards it was back to their classes for the students. But most would agree that the benefit was a huge success. “It’s a great thing to do for our school,” said pre-k teacher Ms. Grgorinic.
