Unsung Bay Ridge: Planting future beauty

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

Our community came together in 1994 to save local parks that were suffering from overgrowth, vermin and general neglect. The civic activists in Bay Ridge formed the Bay Ridge Parks and Waterfront Council.

Dyker Heights soon followed with the Friends of McKinley Park, co-founded by Eleanor Petty. She helped bring together block associations, students and the Fort Hamilton Parkway Merchants Association to clean Leif Ericson and Dyker Parks.

EleanorÂ’s interest in her community led to her appointment as a member of Community Board 10 where she served as chairperson of the Parks Committee. She moved to Bay Ridge with her husband Bob, and became actively involved with the Bay Ridge Community Council. Eleanor is a retired schoolteacher, and continues to dedicate her time and energy toward working for our community.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Receding gums

This folk remedy for a receding gum has been tried and recommended by many who said they could not afford to have the medical alternative.

Here is the recipe: Crush one vitamin C tablet, one niacin, one vitamin B complex and one calcium/magnesium tablet with a mortar and pestle. Secure in an air-tight bottle and store in the refrigerator.

Every 24 hours, rub 1/10 of a teaspoon between teeth and gums. It is said that you will see a difference in two weeks. I will try it and report my results.

Please consult your doctor if you are ill or on any medication.
