Unsung Bay Ridge: Cruz control

This week’s unsung hero is Doris CruzRosemarie O’Keefe.

Together, they spent years going from block to block in an effort to help the residents unite for cleaning and public safety. Many of these block associations are still active.

Doris joined Community Board 10 and has been active in many committees. She is the current vice chair of the board and also serves as chairperson of the Traffic & Transportation Committee.

Doris’ husband, John, and their son, Jason, support her tireless dedication to enhancing our quality of life. She is an inspiration to us all.

A very special happy birthday to my dear friend and voice of the American Legion, Howie Dunn. Howie is a patriot who works year round raising funds for our wounded warriors. He is active in Amity Post and still finds the time to help the Bay Ridge Community Council.

Supporting him every step of the way is Mae, his wife and working partner for many years. I wish Howie many more healthy ones.

The Dyker Heights Civic Association and the 68th Precinct Community Council will hold their annual toy drive for the children served by Reaching-Out Community Services as well as the military children at Fort Hamilton Army base, at their joint meeting on December 10.

The public is invited to bring a toy to St. Philip’s Church, 80th Street and 11th Avenue, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Parties and holiday celebrations are in the air. Here are a few folk remedies in the event of a hangover:

•Just before retiring to bed, stir one tablespoon sugar in a glass of orange juice and drink it.

•When you wake up in the morning, cut a lemon in quarters and rub the juicy side of one quarter on each armpit.

•Prevention is better than the cure, says the popular adage. Eat coleslaw before drinking and it reportedly helps prevent drunkenness.

Please consult your doctor if you are ill or on any medication.
