Unsung Bay Ridge: Donna does it all

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

This week I have chosen to spotlight Donna Mae DePolaDonna was a charter member of BRAVO, and we worked together for many years in this service. She was also a co-founder of the Bensonhurst Volunteer Ambulance Corp.

I was not surprised when Donna founded the Resource Training and Counseling Center in Sunset Park, an organization that covers a wide array of social services. Among those served are people who need job preparation training, those with alcohol and drug addiction problems and battered women. In addition, DWI driving classes are among the services she makes available to the community.

In addition to her busy schedule, Donna still finds to time to be an active member of Community Board Seven. She is truly a warm and caring person who is there for anyone in need. I was delighted when Donna moved back to Bay Ridge. She is truly an asset to her 80th Street block.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Turmeric for weight loss

One teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of water on rising in the morning and before bed at night has been a folk remedy for weight loss, migraines, sinus problems, knee pain and many other ailments. It suppresses the appetite and that is supposedly one reason for the weight loss. Turmeric is sold in most spice sections of your local supermarket.

Please consult your doctor if you are ill or on any medication.
