A winter weather reminder

The following comes courtesy of Councilmember Jumaane Williams of Flatbush, Canarsie and Midwood:

The National Weather Service has issued an updated winter storm warning for residents of New York City. The Service anticipates 5 to 8 inches of snow accumulation today, with gradually reduced snowfall, along with freezing rain, throughout Tuesday night, into Wednesday.

Check real time travel conditions at 511NYC, if you must travel.

Please check on your neighbors who are senior citizens or individuals with special needs, as they may need assistance obtaining necessities during inclement weather, including perishables. NYC Service is partnering with community based organizations that offer snow removal services. Please visit NYC Service for more information on how to volunteer.

Those without homes need our help! Call 311 and ask for the Mobile Outreach Response Team if you know someone without a home, who needs assistance. Outreach workers are available 24 hours-a-day.

Alternate Side Parking is suspended to facilitate snow removal. However, meters will remain in effect, according to the New York City Department of Transportation.

Visit PlowNYC to track the progress of plowing on your block. Contact Council Member Williams if your block as not been plowed within a reasonable time (see below).

There will be delays in collection service during ongoing snow operations. Residents should clear snow from material already out and place material on the sidewalk (not in the street) where it will be accessible to Sanitation Workers. Notices of Violation for properly packaged refuse and recyclables will not be issued while there are any service delays.

Safety Reminders

For Motorists

  • If you must drive a vehicle, monitor weather and traffic reports for the latest road conditions.
  • Use major streets or highways for travel whenever possible as these roadways will be cleared first.
  • Drive slowly. Vehicles, including those with 4-wheel drive, take longer to stop on snow and ice than on dry pavement.
  • Keep the name and phone number of at least one local towing service in your car in case you break down or become stuck in the snow.
  • If you get stuck on the road stay with your car and contact a towing company.

For Pedestrians

  • Exercise caution and avoid slippery surfaces; some ice may not be visible.
  • Wear layers including a hat, gloves and scarf to stay protected from the cold. And, keep clothes and shoes dry.
  • Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go outside.
  • Have heightened awareness of cars, particularly when approaching or crossing intersections.
Additionally, you should:
  • Make sure that you have poured adequate amounts of rock salt around your home or business to help prevent injuries to yourself and your neighbors.
  • Check on senior citizens and neighbors with special needs to ensure that they have adequate essentials and supplies, including perishables.

Tips for Staying Warm

Exposure to cold can cause life-threatening health conditions. Avoid serious conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia, by keeping warm.

  • Wear a hat, hood, or scarf.
  • Wear layers, as they provide better insulation and warmth.
  • Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go outside.
  • Keep clothing dry; if a layer becomes wet, remove it.
