Editorial: Summer in our sights

Given the winter snows, the warmth of summer may seem a long distance away.

But, organizers of the Summer Stroll on Third Avenue aren’t waiting for the ice to melt before getting started on putting together the event for 2014.

And, this year, they are hoping that it will be even bigger and better, not only encompassing a long stretch of the avenue, but expanding to two more Friday evenings, for a total of six Summer Strolls.

We think that’s a great idea.

Summer Stroll – which was held on four summer evenings in each of the past two years – turned Third Avenue into a largely car-free promenade, along which community members were able to dine at restaurants which had set up tables outside, watch entertainment at various locations and shop at the strip’s many interesting stores.

Both businesses and residents have proclaimed the event a success – with those who live in the community praising the event’s offerings, and enjoying the opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbors they might not have seen for a while, and merchants delighted with the additional business during an otherwise sleepy time of year.

We hope the city agrees, and issues permits for the six evenings requested by those who are putting the event together.

It will be to everyone’s benefit.

DOING THE RIDGE PROUD

Jimmy Fallon – who made his debut on “The Tonight Show” on Monday, February 7 – is the talk of Bay Ridge.

Born in the neighborhood, Fallon is a native son who has made an indelible mark on the small screen, moving from stand-up to “Saturday Night Live” and a series of film and TV appearances before snagging his own show, “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” in 2009.

He is not the first celeb to hail from the nabe – Ricky Schroder and Maria Bartiromo are among those who have called Bay Ridge home – and we are sure he will not be the last.

But this week belongs to Fallon, and we are delighted to join with our neighbors in congratulating him.
