Unsung Bay Ridge: A quiet community stalwart

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

This week, our spotlight is turned on a beautiful Bay Ridge resident, who has quietly spent decades in community service. Shirley Behlen served as vice president of the 68th Precinct Community Council for 25 years with her husband, the late Michael BehlenShirley, her son Michael and daughter Denise also created a scholarship fund after Mike’s passing, to assist high school students who had exemplary community service records.

She continues her volunteer work in the community as she supports charitable causes with the New York Telephone Pioneers. Shirley is a member of the Ragamuffin Children’s Parade and a member of St. Patrick’s Church. She can be seen at many community fundraisers, adding a touch of class as she supports the occasion.

I wish her continued good health as she does her part to make our community a better place in which to live.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Parsley

If your blood vessels are thin and you bruise easily, try to add some more parsley to your diet. It helps to maintain elasticity of blood vessels. Parsley also helps to balance hormones in menopausal women and it is a good support for an even temperament among those who suffer from PMS and other hormonal imbalances.

Parsley is effective in most kidney complaints, except severe kidney inflammation. It helps to dispel waste from the blood and tissues of the kidneys. People who suffer from edema or general water retention should add parsley to their daily salad.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or on any medication.
