Fontbonne opens softball season with four consecutive wins

Fontbonne’s Varsity softball team began the 2014 season in strong order with four consecutive wins in the Queens Catholic High School AA Division. After taking the division last season and making it to the state title game, the Bonnies appear prepared to make a second run for another softball title.

April 1 vs. Christ the King at Bergen Beach – FHA 6, CTK 2

Natalie Lacognata (three for four) hit a two-run homer to break open a 0-0 game to make it 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Maria Serrantino (four for four) followed in the same inning with a RBI single, and a fifth inning triple that drove in a run for a 4-1 lead. Maria Gentile capped off the Bonnies scoring with another two-run homer to give Fontbonne its first win of the season. In her first win to open the season, Bianca Marletta pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.

April 2 vs. Molloy at Bergen Beach – FHA 3, Molloy 0

Once again, Lacognata (two for three with two RBIs) provided the offense for the win with a triple in the bottom of the fifth inning driving in two runs to give Fontbonne a late 2-0 lead. Nicolette Trapani pitched a seven-inning shutout, giving up just three hits along with notching 11 strikeouts for her first win of the season.

April 4 vs. Mary Louis Academy at Bergen – FHA 4, MLA 2

Serrantino (two for three, two runs and two RBIs) put the Bonnies out in front 2-0 in the first inning with a triple while her teammates tacked on two more runs for the win. Pitcher Trapani earned her second win of the season pitching another complete seven inning game, giving up two unearned runs on five hits with 13 strikeouts.

April 8 vs. St. Francis Prep in Queens – FHA 8, SFP 2

Trapani (one for two with a triple for three RBIs) sent a bases-loaded triple to the outfield, giving Fontbonne a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Continuing her strong offensive start to the season, Serrantino (three for four with two RBIs) drove in two runs in the top of the seventh for some insurance runs to make the final score 8-2. Also contributing offense to the win were Bianca Marletta with two hits and one RBI along with teammate Julia Schalk who had two hits and two runs scored.
