Fontbonne takes an early lead to start the season

Fontbonne’s Varsity softball team took over first place in the Brooklyn/Queens Catholic High School AA Division, finishing this past week with a record of 6-1. The Bonnies have gained an early lead in the league on the arms of their strong pitching staff, Nicolette Trapani (4-1) and Bianca Marletta (2-0).

April 14 vs. Mary Lewis Academy – FHA4, MLA 0En route to an 11-strikeout performance, Trapani notched her first strikeout of the game with two runners on base to get out of the first inning. Christine Calacione put the Bonnies on the board with an RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 Fontbonne lead at the end of the fourth inning.

Beginning the fifth inning, Maria Serrantino’s sacrifice fly made the score 2-0, while Maria Gentile followed with a liner into centerfield bringing two more runners home for the 4-0 win. Trapani finished with another strong win, giving up no runs and one hit, and notching 11 strikeouts for Fontbonne’s fifth win of the season.

April 17 @ Archbishop Molloy – Molloy 3, FHA 2In what would be the Bonnies first loss of the season, Julia Schalk led off the top of the first with a double, but was stranded at second to end the first inning.Molloy followed in the bottom of second to score two runs to take a 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 at the top of the sixth inning until Bianca Marletta laid down a two-strike surprise bunt with runners on first and second. Marletta’s bunt was misplayed by Molloy’s catcher, who threw the ball past her first baseman into right field, scoring two runs for Fontbonne to tie the score 2-2. Molloy capped off the home win in the bottom of seventh inning when Trapani (14 Ks) loaded the bases and gave up a RBI single for the 3-2 Molloy win.

April 17 @ Christ the King – FHA18, CTK 10Fontbonne scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning, enabling Coach Marinello to take his starters out early for the second game of the day’s doubleheader. In place of the starters, the rest of the Varsity scored eight more runs.

Playing for the next six innings, Sue Nordbo went two for three with one run scored and two RBIs, and Erika Cristiano smacked a two-RBI double. Also contributing to the Bonnies’ offensive surge, Abigail Reilly had her first hit as a varsity player, while Delaina Allegretti hit a solo homerun.
