Unsung Bay Ridge: All-around activist

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

I have chosen Lori Willis to be this week’s nominee for our ‘unsung hero’ title. For decades, Lori has been quietly volunteering her services for the good of our community. She was well known to the members of Community Board 10, long before she joined the board, as Lori kept requesting their help on many community concerns.

Eventually she became a board member, and is now serving as chairperson of the Senior Issues, Housing, Health and Welfare Committee. Lori spends a great deal of time on one of the busiest committees on the board.

She also actively assists her husband, Salvatore Carrizzano, in supporting alumnae projects at Xaverian High School. She is a leader in her block association and one who is always ready to make a difference. Lori is indeed an unsung hero in our community.

COMMUNITY NEWS

We extend a warm Bay Ridge welcome to the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Facility’s first female warden, Kim Askcarlson. Some of us may be aware that the staff residence is at Dayton Manor, 92nd Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway. We are happy to have her join our community.

Congratulations to Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello, on being selected grand marshal of the 2014 Ragamuffin Parade. Monsignor Jamie is recognized for his work in supporting education in the Catholic schools, and the outstanding work he did in the past at St. Patrick’s School.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Clean Your Kidneys For Spring

Spring is the time for cleansing and rejuvenation. It is an ideal time for cleaning our bodies as well as our homes. It is said that your kidneys will benefit from this simple beverage.

Take a bunch of parsley that has been properly cleaned, cut into small pieces and boil for 10 minutes. After cooling, strain and pour into a clean glass bottle.

Store in the refrigerator and drink one glass daily. It is said that excess salt and other unwanted toxins will be eliminated through your urine. This folk remedy is very popular for cleansing the kidneys.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or on any medication.
