My friend just broke up with her boyfriend Sam. I have had a crush on Sam since I first met him. How long do you think I should wait to ask Sam out? Do I need to ask my friend first?

That is a great question and also a very tricky one.

First I would say, let things cool off a little and find out if it’s really over. I believe that the general rule should be not to go out with a friend’s ex without his or her consent.

Before you venture into asking your friend, find out if Sam is into you. Nina, if Sam is not into you and you ask your friend before finding out – you might just lose two friends. Think about it and move with caution.
