Bensonhurst school holds annual carnival for local children

It was a day for the kids on Saturday, September 20 at P.S./I.S. 229, as the school hosted its second annual Carnival Fundraiser. Children and their parents were treated to an afternoon of cotton candy, rides, games and music at the schoolyard.

“Community spirit and involvement are two things we are highly engaged with,” said Assistant Principal Jared Shapiro. “Our school motto is home, school, community. We take pride in hosting events that we can bring as many people together as possible.”

Shapiro added that both pre-sale and same day ticket sales were impressive. “The kids love the music, the food, the games and they get to socialize with their peers,” he said. “They love the bounce houses the most.”

Parents were happy to bring their kids to have some outdoor fun. “We’re having a great time. My daughter can’t decide what ride to go on first,” said Daniella D.

“My son loves the cotton candy the best,” added Guy P. of his son Jayden.

“The event is very inexpensive. We are giving back to students so they have some fun. It’s very stressful for kids so this is something they get to have fun with, as well as parents,” said Cathy Sposato, member of the PTA.

“We do it as a fundraiser but we also do it for community support as well,” added Shapiro. “This is something that we look forward to, year after year, to continue this progress. And anything we can do as a school to support our community we look forward to doing.”

Shapiro also noted the integral role volunteers played in making the event possible. “I’d like to thank our wonderful PTA for helping organizing and dedicating their time,” said Shapiro. “And plenty of staff members volunteered to make it happen.”

P.S./I.S. 229 is located at 1400 Benson Avenue.
