A short list has been released of 14 potential sites to be dug up for potential sewage tanks and a popular Gowanus park/playground is among those included by the city Department of Environmental Protection.
Thomas Greene Playground/Douglass Greene Park is included in two of the proposals. The green space also sits next to two more proposed sites. If chosen, the park/playground, which includes the public “Double D” pool, would be uprooted to make room for underground tanks.
The tanks are part of a larger plan to clean up the Gowanus Canal, which is a toxic federal Superfund site.
The short list does not include schools, religious institutions and “most residential” sites.
Four sites – two each for each sewage tank – will make an even shorter list that will be sent to the Environmental Protection Agency on September 30.
Final site selection will be decided by July 2015.
