Get your walking shoes on to raise money for Bay Ridge Center

The Bay Ridge Center will host its 20th Annual Walkathon for its senior citizens on Saturday, September 20.

The walkathon raises money that funds the center’s programs, including the Meals on Wheels program, which delivers food to the elderly in Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Gravesend and Dyker Heights.

Starting from the Bay Ridge Center, located at 411 Ovington Avenue, the walk is a 1.9 mile loop. Companies, schools, Boy Scout troops and other organizations are welcome to walk with banners and uniforms. Prizes will be awarded to the walkers who raise the most money.

“We usually get between 150 and 200 people involved,” said Samantha Churak, organizer of the event.

The center will also host a flea market where the senior citizens can show off their artistic talent and projects. Prizes will also be awarded to walkers during a small barbecue.

“Last year we raised $6,000 and we’re grateful for anything we can get this year,” said Churak.

Registration for the walkathon will be open from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m.
