Beating Cancer in Heels: Get away!

Sometimes being around the same surroundings can cause you to feel claustrophobic. What I mean by that is, your problems become larger because you are so close to what is going on. This can cause you to focus on your issues more then you should. Getting away for a little R&R has a great way of putting things into perspective and gives your mind a rest or you try, anyway.

I recently went away on a mini vacation with my father to Mexico. The main objective of this trip was to relax and to celebrate his retirement. This seems like a pretty simple thing to do but when you are an anxious person, relaxing can seem like a job.

With that said, something about being away from your everyday life puts things into perspective. You will find that doing so reminds you that life has so many beautiful experiences to offer you and if you spend so much of your time focusing on your trials and tribulations, you will miss out on just that.

When I was swimming in the ocean of clear, clean water off Mexico, with clouds that looked close enough to touch, I stopped and practiced gratitude. I listed all the things I was thankful for at that exact moment and started quickly to feel alive again.

I allowed myself to forget what I had to deal with every day in New York and started to become more present in the beautiful moment that was given to me. Quickly, I became filled with feelings of joy and excitement. I felt energized and wanted to do as much as I could during this vacation.

The more I practiced that, the more I was able to relax and enjoy my vacation. I was able to get out of my head and be present for the person, who I wanted to spend my time with, my dad.

You don’t have to go to another country to get away. You could stay at a friend’s house in another borough or take a road trip for a day or two. The point is that, no matter what you are going though, life goes on and surrounding yourself with unfamiliar territory will remind you of just that.

So, my beautiful Coachee, let’s help you get away for a little bit and regroup. You have a lot to deal with every day and you deserve some time to just submerge yourself into a new experience that will fill you with moments of joy!

Now, Coachee, let’s get out of town!

      Ask yourself…

Where can I visit that would allow me to relax?

How can I make time for this experience?

Would I like to bring someone with me? If so, who?

Would I like to visit someone?

How could I hold myself accountable for making this trip happen?
